This invasive species is edible except for the venomous spines. It is gaining popularity in restaurants in order to reduce it’s numbers as a form of stewardship of the reefs. They are beautiful! but harmful outside of their native range.
As a child I witnessed the shoreline that I grew up on change drastically with the invasive species we call zebra mussels. These razor sharp but very small critters established themselves on every possible surface. We had to suddenly wear foot protection all the time on the beach and in the water.
Years ago I began a series of drawings on nautical charts whereby my focus is on the native OR the invasive species of the region. I begin by learning about the area and then choosing plants and/or critters to draw.
